Microneedling for the skin
Microneedling for the skin – Before your visit
How to prepare
Please arrive at the office wearing NO MAKEUP OR SUNSCREEN. If you come wearing makeup or sunscreen, please know that you will need to remove it here. The treatment is done with your skin completely clean.
**You will not be able to apply anything to your skin (makeup, sunscreen, moisturizer, etc.) until the FOLLOWING MORNING. Most patients like to bring a baseball hat and sunglasses as your skin will be red and a little swollen when you leave. It is recommended that after the treatment you go directly home. Please do NOT have social or work engagements for that evening as you WILL NOT be able to apply makeup.
During your visit
When you arrive at the office your skin will be cleansed if you are wearing any makeup or sunscreen and topical numbing cream will be applied. Before photos will be taken that will be used only for your record.
You will have the option of taking an antiviral tablet (Valtrex). If you’ve ever had a cold sore/ fever blister, it is recommended that you take the medication to prevent a possible outbreak.
If you’ve opted for microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma), a single tube of blood will be drawn from your arm, the same as having a blood test.
Most people describe the microneedling treatment as feeling like a vibration or like sandpaper being rubbed over the skin.
After the treatment either PRP, growth factor or hyaluronic acid will be spread over the treatment area depending on your specific procedure. You will be instructed not to cleanse or apply anything additional to your skin until the following morning. This is because the micro channels that are created by the procedure will remain open for up to 6 hours.
Following your treatment
The day of your treatment
If you’ve had the PRP procedure, leave the PRP solution on until the following morning.
It is normal for your skin to be red and feel very tight. If it is too uncomfortable, you may cleanse your skin gently with water only that evening. You can use a gentle facial moisturizer (cetaphil, cerave, aveeno, eucerin, etc.) or the hyaluronic acid solution given in the office (PRP procedure only) after cleansing once a day for the next 5 days.
If you’ve had microneedling with Hyaluronic Acid or Growth Factor, cleanse your skin gently with only water before bed that night and moisturize.
You can use cool compresses to soothe the skin if your skin is feeling sore.
Practice good sun protection and avoid abrasive cleansers (scrubs) or topicals (Retinol, Retin A, etc.) for 2–3 days. Avoid aggressive exercise for the next 2-3 days. It is normal to experience some stinging in the treatment areas when you sweat for the first 1-3 days. You may apply makeup the day following your treatment. It is normal to notice peeling of the skin (similar to after a sun burn) for the next one week.
